Goal 25 Completed: 31 Days of Halloween

It’s been a heck of a Halloween. I ended up dedicating a lot more time towards this holiday throughout October than expected and ended up losing a lot of my documentation process. On the bright side, I managed to make every October day a Halloween day. Throughout the month I managed to do a lot of wonderful Halloween stuff. I got to visit various Halloween festivities, I had a bonfire dedicated to roasting Halloween themed candy, crafted my horror crafts, visited many a haunted houses, and even did a traditional pumpkin smashing(Don’t worry, we bought our own to smash). It’s sad to say that the Halloween horrors are over now for this year, but next year I hope to make Halloween even bigger and better.

31 Days of Halloween: Day 3, Playing Alan Wake

Nothing says Halloween like a bit of terror. I felt one of the best things to start it off is playing the horror game called, Alan Wake. My girlfriend and I have talked about trying to play this game for a long while. We are interested in working on a horror game together and a lot of the mechanics we want to use are also used in Alan Wake.

The game starts off with our main character, Alan Wake. He’s a horror book author who wants nothing more but to get away from it all and take a vacation in the fictional town, Bright Falls. The game cleverly uses darkness as the enemy and you must fight it with nothing more but a flashlight and a gun. I love this idea of using a flashlight as one of your primarily weapons. It’s limited battery use made it feel like it’s absolutely crucial not to use it carelessly.

The game’s plot felt very familiar to previous suspense-thriller movie tropes like Secret Window and Misery. It felt like I wasn’t really playing a game, rather I was in a movie. The cutscenes transition smoothing between gameplay making the game feel fluid. The entire experience had me on edge trying hard not make the one mistake that’ll kill me.

So far I’ve only finished up Act I of the game. My girlfriend and I felt like we had enough notes to use for our own game’s design. With all of this said, we decided we wanted to play more horror themed games throughout the month of October. We cannot wait to continue our days of Halloween-filled fun.

31 Days of Halloween: Day 2, Pumpkin Patch and Apples

One of my favorite activities to do during the fall is to go apple picking. There’s nothing better than picking fresh apples from your local orchard during the cool autumn weather. My girlfriend and I decided to head to a place down south called, Minnesota Harvest Apple Orchard. Looking at the reviews it seemed like an awesome place to go, plus the idea of Apple Pizza sounded more than intriguing.

We arrived to Minnesota Harvest a bit later into the afternoon. We were fortunate enough to have gone on a Friday so there were were very few people around to crowd the area. My girlfriend and I both ate light to save room for the food there. Unfortunately though, they were already closing up the kitchen and we did not get a chance to try out their Apple Pizza. We instead bought a plastic bag to fill up some apples from the orchard

We wandered around the orchard a bit, but had a very difficult time navigating it. The Apple Orchards were divided up into numbered sections but it was not clearly marked what each type of apples the sections were. However, taking a quick bite out of the apples helped us resolve both our hunger issue and identifying what apples we wanted. Despite the fact it was October we still managed to gather a hull of perfectly delicious apples.

After we had filled our apple bag we went off to explore other activities offered at the orchard. We first went off to their sunflower maze to get lost. When we got there, the maze’s flowers had withered away. Needless to say, the maze was not hard to navigate through. I also loved how the withered maze during dusk added to a creepiness feel. We went to go pick out some pumpkins from their pumpkin patch before heading off to the cities.

On our way back we stopped by this arcade place located in Jordan called Zap Arcade. It felt great to go back to an old school arcade place in Minnesota. For $5 to get unlimited access to the games it felt like it was money well spent. We ended our adventure by eating at a place called J’Panime Cafe, were we feasted our a delectable bowl of Seafood Ramen and Boba tea.
